This small shrub grows to 3-5'H x 3-5'W and has large, bright green leaves with clusters of small, yellow flowers followed by berries that turn from orange to black/purple. Birds love the berries.

Matilija Poppy

Common name:Matilija Poppy
Botanical name:Romneya coulteri

Crowned by white poppies, this high-impact, spreading gray-green perennial stands statuesque at 5-8" tall. It is best used where its scale and habit will not overpower, and it requires no summer water and thrives on dry alluvial slopes..

Deer Grass

Common name:Deer Grass
Botanical name:Muhlenbergia rigens

The deer grass is a warm season perennial that forms dense clumps from the base. The spike like flower stalks grow 2-3 ft. tall and this grass has striking foundation form. The deer grass is native to California, is drought tolerant, and is a beneficial insect plant. -Cornflower Farms

This is a slow growing lavender that grows to 1' tall with deep purple flowers. It is drought tolerant and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. -Cornflower Farms

Ignition Purple Salvia

Common name:Ignition Purple Salvia
Botanical name:Salvia x jamensis ‘Ignition Purple’

Well, if this isn’t one of the most impressive newer Salvia hybrids. A seriously prolific bloomer – giving you hordes of good-sized 3/4” electric violet-purple blooms from Spring to end of Fall. Neat and more compact than many Salvias – to 20” x 24” – it’s perfect for the front of your bed and a great long-blooming container choice (5 gal). Best in loamy, well-drained soil, you can keep its foliage happy and emerald green with a twice-a-season bit of compost. Evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on Winter temps. Cut back to 5” in Winter for maximum bushiness next year. Said to be quite tolerant of humidity. Bees and hummingbirds! Give afternoon shade in warm inland areas.

Gray Globe Mallow

Common name:Gray Globe Mallow
Botanical name:Sphaeralcea incana ‘Kathy Echols’

My favorite prolific bloomer in our dry garden! I love its dense upright 3’-2’ bushy habit, absolutely stunning silvery foliage, and wow, then there are these unusual flowers. Beloved Bay Area horticulturalist Kathy Echols somehow came across this beautiful variant with orchid pink flowers (instead of the usual dull orange) that are larger than normal- 1.25” across. and this marvelous DROUGHT TOLERANT North American native blooms from late Spring through Fall! What more do you need? Deer resistant? Yes! I cut ours back to 1’ tall in late Fall for perfect form next season. Well-drained soil is a must and a smidge of compost side-dress in Spring is not a bad thing. Root hardy to 10 degrees F.

California Poppy, Golden Poppy

Common name:California Poppy, Golden Poppy
Botanical name:Eschscholzia californica

This small annual (sometimes acts as a perennial) plant will grow to less than 1' tall and has light, small blue/green leaves with gold and orange flowers that bloom in spring and summer.
