Common name:Basket of Gold
Botanical name:Alyssum saxatile
Use as a foreground plant in borders, in rock gardens, and atop walls. This plant is generally hardy but may be killed in extremely cold winters. Dense clusters of tiny golden yellow flowers cover the plant in spring and early summer.
Common name:California Poppy, Golden Poppy
Botanical name:Eschscholzia californica
This small annual (sometimes acts as a perennial) plant will grow to less than 1' tall and has light, small blue/green leaves with gold and orange flowers that bloom in spring and summer.
Common name:‘Cornelia’ Hybrid musk rose
Botanical name:Rosa 'Cornelia'
This old-fashioned looking rose has a bicolor look with its clustered coral buds and pink double flowers with copper centers. It forms an arching shrub, reaching 5 feet high and wide, and blooms from spring to autumn, with its largest flush in the spring. Hybrid musk roses are usually fragrant. They are ideal for borders or hedges, and make excellent companions to herbaceous perennials. They can tolerate more shade than most roses. Grow in fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Provide good air circulation and remove fallen leaves to help prevent disease. Prune lightly or back by up to 1/3, reducing side shoots by 1/2 to 1/3. To renovate, prune one in four or five shoots from the base. Cornelia reaches 3-6' tall and wide. It tolerates full to part sun.
Common name:Oriental Poppy
Botanical name:Papaver orientale
Large, beautifully crinkled blooms of bright colors are produced by this poppy in the spring to mid-summer seasons. It prefers rich, well-drained soils for growth.
Common name:Penelope Rose
Botanical name:Rosa 'Penelope'
The award-winning Rose 'Penelope' was introduced in 1924, produced by the Rev. Joseph Pemberton. It boasts 4-5" large saucer shaped blooms with 16 to 25 petals that bloom in large clusters. Along with its showy blooms, its hybrid musk fragrance is strong. Although it has a long bloom season, flowering continuously from summer into the fall, the spring blooms are superior. Young foliage has a showy copper tint, which will turn a dark glossy green as it ages. It will also provide winter interest with a production of orange-pink hips. It can quickly reach 4-8' tall and 4-5' wide, with a dense habit. It tolerates full to part sun with rich, fertile, moist, well draining soil. Better flowering and disease resistance in full sun. Flowers are light blush to shell pink with small oval buds. Flowers fade to white. Foliage is green and glossy.
Common name:Dalmatian Peach Foxglove
Botanical name:Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Peach'
This fast growing, first year flowering perennial foxglove received high scores in German trials. It ranked high due to its strong growth habit, floridity, and pure colored flowers. The flowers open a pretty shade of pinkish peach and then lighten to a soft peach color with tiny orange speckled throats. The basal foliage forms a compact clump and the plants are well-branched. Digitalis forms large rosettes of downy, green, oblong leaves from which numerous flower spikes emerge. It looks especially nice when planted along fences, at the wood's edge, or in large containers.
