Botanical name:Pennisetum orientale 'Karley Rose'

'Karley Rose' is the most significant of the Fountain Grasses. It is known for its decorative, rose purple plumes that move elegantly in the wind. It can be used in containers. 'Karley Rose' is a cold hardy variety that holds its blooms throughout the season. Tolerant of both drought and partial shade, this fountain grass has winter interest and has no major pest or disease issues.

Frades or Compact Escallonia

Common name:Frades or Compact Escallonia
Botanical name:Escallonia X exoniensis 'Frades'

The 'Frades' is an evergreen shrub that grows to 6'-8' tall and wide. It is valued for its glossy foliage and clusters of pink flowers. The heaviest bloom period is during spring and fall, with some flowers all year. The Escallonias grow best in sun to part shade, but will tolerate mostly shade if necessary. These plants usually need little or no summer watering. This is the most tolerant of poor drainage of all Escallonia varieties.

Royal Burgundy Barberry

Botanical name:Berberis thunbergii 'Royal Burgundy'

A deciduous deep burgundy leaved shrub with upright/mounding branches which reaches 2 ft high and 2-3 ft wide. The foliage becomes reddish burgundy in summer and fall. Similar to 'Crimson Pygmy' but a deeper, richer color.

Twin Flowered Agave

Botanical name:Agave geminiflora

Twin Flowered Agave gets its name from flower spikes which are formed in pairs on an unbranched spike that rises up to 10 feet. This Agave is a single-stemmed dwarf Agave with narrow, dark green flexible leaves. The leaves cascade from the center of the plant forming a dense rounded rosette up to 3 feet tall and wide.

Shaw's Century Plant

Common name:Shaw's Century Plant
Botanical name:Agave shawii

This succulent reaches 2-3' tall and 2' wide but will form large spreading colonies. Leaves are 4" across and about 2' long, thick and rigid, upward curving and gray green. Leaf margins have spines and there is also a terminal spine. It does need some protection from the sun in the low desert; it prefers afternoon shade in these areas. It is not very cold hardy and tolerates coastal conditions.

Practice grass-cycling by leaving short grass clippings on lawns after mowing, so that nutrients and organic matter are returned to the soil.
