Toyon is a California native evergreen shrub that grows 8'-15'. high and spreading 8'. It has leathery, toothed, green leaves. Small, white, fragrant flowers appear in late spring or early summer, followed by clusters of red winter berries. It tolerates full sun or partial shade, heat, smog, wind and heavy or light soils. Established plants are drought tolerant. It may take several years for plant to be established; at that point, it's great for erosion control.

'California Glory' is an open and spreading evergreen shrub 20' in height and width. This shrub is covered in yellow flowers in spring. It needs good drainage and little summer water in full sun. It is a native plant to California as the name suggests and it is drought tolerant. Leaves are grayish green and fuzzy; fuzzy stuff may be irritating to skin so make sure you wear gloves when pruning. Brown mostly green capsules appear in fall, creating litter when they fall. This shrub does best in sandy soil. This plant needs very little watering after it's established.

The needle grass is a cool season bunchgrass that grows 1-2 ft. tall with graceful, shiny flower stalks that reach 30 in. long in the spring.
