Wax Leaf Privet

Common name:Wax Leaf Privet
Botanical name:Ligustrum japonicum 'Texanum'

A versatile evergreen with a compact habit and glossy green foliage that responds well to regular pruning into formal topiary, clipped hedges, or small standard trees. Displays a profusion of fragrant, white blooms in spring. Useful as an informal hedge, screen or windbreak. Performs well in containers. This is probably the most frequently used Privet because it is so adaptable to topiary forms. Available in neat, vertical poodle forms, which are lovely in simple elegant pots flanking the front door or porch steps. Buy pyramid form for topiary gardens to flank walkways and gateways or to position on each corner of a center square knot garden or parterre. Can be used for lush green background foliage or as a large-scale windbreak. Makes an effective sound barrier near busy streets. Provide well-drained soil. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system; reduce frequency, once established. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. For a tidy, neat appearance, prune regularly to maintain size and shape. Does best in full or part sun. Reaches 10' tall and 6' wide if not pruned. It is tolerant of coastal conditions and deer resistant.

Soils and Compost:

Practice grass-cycling by leaving short grass clippings on lawns after mowing, so that nutrients and organic matter are returned to the soil.

Integrated Pest Management:

Remove irrigation water and fertilizer from areas where you don't want weeds to grow.
